The 150 show

It’s not every year, or even every decade, that an institution reaches such an important milestone. We celebrate our 150th anniversary on 17 May 2021 and are using the opportunity to celebrate with the rest of the world by broadcasting a one-hour magazine programme each day of our anniversary week at 1pm (BST).

We’ll be using this show to celebrate engineering with our current members while inspiring those from outside the STEM community too!

Each programme, filmed from our flagship venue, IET London: Savoy Place, will explore a range of interesting topics such as the future of medicine, sustainability in fashion, women in STEM, our digital future and much more.

Throughout the week the shows have a slightly different theme:

The 150 Show – 17 May – The Health Edition

To celebrate turning 150 on 17 May, we’re kicking off the first instalment of The 150 Show, hosted by our President, Danielle George, the first programme will cover exciting topics around healthcare and future of digital healthcare technologies, from the development the Oxford COVID vaccine, to assistive technologies, health optimisation and much more.

The 150 Show – 18 May – The Green Edition

We believe engineers have the skills, insights and ingenuity to help tackle climate change and find sustainable solutions to the world’s issues. During this programme we explore the innovative ways that engineers and society are helping to solve these global issues. From climate change and sustainable fashion, to packet-less food and electric motorsport.

During this jam-packed show, we’ll be focussing on what it means to be an engineer, which is often very different from the stereotype. As well as how engineering is open to everyone and has an impact on all of society.

Technology has a huge role to play in shaping our future. The pace of technological change has increased so quickly that one decade’s must-have gadget can become obsolete the next. So, what will tomorrow’s world look like? That’s what we’ll be exploring during this episode of The 150 Show!

The 150 Show – 21 May – The Youth Edition

Engineers design, invent, fix and improve and are changing our world for the better! During this episode we want to show the next generation that if they want to make a difference in this world, they can do it through STEM…after all, the future is in their hands.

Presenting across the week is our President, Professor Danielle George, and co-host, Bobby Seagull, and they’ll be talking to the range of exciting guests we have lined up.

From professors to engineers, to CEOs and TV personalities such as Carol Vorderman and Konnie Huq, to our Engineering Excellence Honorary Fellows, rising stars and IET experts – the week is jam-packed with guests.

Each episode of The 150 Show will feature our Youth STEM Personality of the Year winner – Callum Daniel, who will be bringing you an exciting experiment every day that you can follow along with at home.

As well as a bakeneering segment with Great British Bake Off finalist – Andrew Smyth, who will be taking on a different type of technical challenge.
